The Scapula brings the smooth speed, drive, and hold of a traditional keel fin with a more playful, responsive feel. Designed to deliver powerful down-the-line performance without feeling overly stiff or locked in, the Scapula strikes a balance between control and freedom.
Its refined outline maintains the stability and drive you expect from a keel while allowing for fluid transitions, tighter turns, and a looser feel in the pocket. Whether you’re drawing long, flowing lines or pushing through more aggressive turns, the Scapula is designed to respond without sacrificing the drive that makes keel fins so enjoyable.
SIGNATURE FLOW CHANNEL
What sets the Scapula apart is Backbone’s signature Flow Channel—a distinctive opening designed to influence water movement and pressure across the fin.
As the fin loads up through a turn, the Flow Channel allows water to pass between its surfaces, relieving some of the pressure associated with the locked-in feel of traditional keels. Its contoured edges are designed to encourage smoother water movement through the opening, with the goal of enhancing responsiveness while preserving the fin’s natural drive and stability.
It’s a different approach to keel performance, designed to give you the hold when you need it and the freedom to release when you want it.

At Backbone Surf Co., anatomy is more than just inspiration—it’s part of who we are. With a physical therapist on our team, we’ve always appreciated the relationship between structure, strength, and movement.
Named after the shoulder blade, the Scapula draws inspiration from both its distinctive shape and its role in the fluid motion of paddling. The shoulder blade provides stability while allowing an incredible range of movement—much like the balance we set out to achieve with this fin.
The Scapula brings that same philosophy to the water: strength and stability when you need it, with the freedom to move when you want it.
